Moi kaikki,

you have enrolled to TIES327, which will start 5th of Sept. The course is hands on course and will be completed by doing exercises (will be done independently/groups and remotely). The opening lecture will be on tomorrow the 5th of Sept. at 12:15:

The course is completed by doing the exercises linked at the course's web page:
https://tim.jyu.fi/view/kurssit/tie/ties327/2023/index

The exercises require some power from the computer (we recommend e.g. 24 GB RAM so that the virtual environment works well). For those students who do not have enough power with their own computer use course's servers see instructions at here. https://tim.jyu.fi/view/kurssit/tie/ties327/2023/introduction/all_in_one#E4w2gFT7vP5x

Answers to the exercises can be submitted in Finnish or English. You may save as many answers as you like to TIM- system before the deadline - only the latest one is graded. Points for each assignment are granted once the answers are graded, few days after the deadline. The number of points you can obtain for completing one assignment is at maximum 5.  In order to pass the course with the minimum grade, you need to complete at least preliminary and basic parts of each assignment and receive at least 2.5 points for your answers.

Students are encouraged to work in groups. The group size limit is 3. When submitting answers as a group, keep in mind the following rules:
When working locally at TIM, i.e. on the same PC: add all users to the TIM session by clicking your name in the upper part of the page and selecting "Add a user to this session...". Your answers will then be grouped automatically
When working remotely at TIM, i.e. not on the same PC: you must mention all the members of the group in each answer where it is possible. Moreover, each member of the group has to submit the same answer in TIM, i.e. it is not enough that only a single member of the group submits the answers.
You are also welcome to comment the instructions in case you find an error or a typo in the text, but only if you are 100% positive that there is an error. An example of a comment can be found at the beginning of the first tutorial.

If you have a problem with the assignments, you can also ask others for help using the comments or dedicated chat page. However, before doing that, double-check that you are actually following the assignment instructions properly.

There will be an online demo clinic twice a week, where we can check possible issues related to the exercises on Tuesday's and Thursday's at 12:15-14:00. The Zoom link is:

Completing Tutorials is not required, but they are worth reading especially for the students less experienced in Linux and virtualization. You can obtain 3 - 7 ECTS for this course as follows:

    3 ECTS: assignments 1 - 4
    4 ECTS: assignments 1 - 4 + any 1 from the rest
    5 ECTS: assignments 1 - 4 + any 2 from the rest
    6 ECTS: assignments 1 - 4 + any 3 from the rest
    7 ECTS: assignments 1 - 8

You can start to do the exercises right now.

All the best,

- Timo
